Anxiety and depression

Undoubtedly the majority of people presenting to our clinic with the MTHFR gene mutation have suffered from anxiety and depression at some time of their lives. Some have tried many different anti-depressants but find that these have done little to reduce anxiety or improve mood and their depression is still debilitating.

So why does MTHFR enzyme and he lack of folate affect mood?

Methyl folate, with the help of Vitamin B 12 goes on to make SAMe (S-adensoyl methionine). Think of this substance as your pharmacist in your body. He distributes methyl’s to wherever they are needed and most notably our brain chemicals. So, these methyl’s help us create the following:

  • Serotonin
  • Dopamine
  • GABA (calming brain chemical)

If we have a lack of these methyl’s or we can’t use the ones we do have, then our mood and anxiety can be affected. Working to correct this imbalance can improve our mood and reduce anxiety considerably because our ability to cope with stress has been improved.

Our practitioners will consider a combination of the following to assist you with your mood and anxiety:

  1. Diet – diet has a huge impact on mood
  2. Gut function – believe it or not gut bugs can affect methylation and mess up your brain chemicals.
  3. Balance key nutrients that are essential to healthy brain function
  4. Sleep – sleep or a lack of sleep can affect brain function.
  5. Hormones

We know that at times your anxiety may be so debilitating that you can’t leave the house. So that’s why we skype.

We also have the philosophy that you need lots of hands on support initially, so we will always be there to help you if you are having difficulties.
